  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar

  • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk, room temperature
  • 2/3 cup vegetable or canola oil
  • 2 squirts of green gel food coloring
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, room temperature (for frosting)
  • 1/2 cup full-fat cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1 Tbsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 1 tsp fine salt (for frosting)
  • 8 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 Tbsp heavy whipping cream, room temperature
  • Electric Green Gel Food Coloring
  • Black Gel Food Coloring

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two round cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together cake flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, cream unsalted butter and granulated sugar until fluffy. Add eggs, buttermilk, oil, green gel food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar; mix until well combined.
  4. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet mixture until just combined; avoid overmixing.
  5. Divide batter into prepared pans and bake for about 28 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Allow cakes to cool completely before frosting with cream cheese buttercream made by beating together unsalted butter, cream cheese, vanilla extract, salt, powdered sugar, and heavy cream.
