  • 1 navel orange
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar (for syrup)
  • 4 tsps grated orange zest (from about 2 large oranges)
  • 1 cup strained fresh orange juice
  • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ½ tsps baking powder
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar (for batter)
  • ⅓ cup unsalted butter
  • ⅓ cup sour cream
  • 3 large eggs

Instructions

  1. Thinly slice the blood and navel oranges; set aside.
  2. In a saucepan, combine water and sugar over medium heat until dissolved to create syrup.
  3. Arrange sliced oranges in a greased cake pan and pour syrup over them. Let sit while preparing the batter.
  4. In one mixing bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, salt, and grated orange zest. In another bowl, beat together sugar, butter, sour cream, eggs, and fresh orange juice until smooth.
  5. Gradually combine dry ingredients with wet ingredients until just mixed; do not overmix.
  6. Pour batter over the fruit in the prepared pan and bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 35 minutes or until golden brown.
